Maria Lax
Maria Lax is a Finnish photographer and director based in London. Her projects explore themes of identity, belief and modern folklore and have been widely exhibited internationally. She has created commercial work for clients including Apple, Channel 4, Vogue Italia, Virgin Records, British Telecom and Samsung.
Lax was a winner of British Journal of Photography’s Female in Focus awards, 2019 and a finalist in the BJP Portrait of Humanity, 2020. She was a PHMuseum Photography Grant Finalist in 2020; selected as one of the ‘Best New Talent of Photo London 2020’ by the Guardian; and received the Finnish Art Promotion Centre’s One Year Grant in 2021.
She has published two photo books, Taken by the Tide (Nazraeli Press, 2023) and Some Kind of Heavenly Fire (Setanta Books, 2020).
